PLN #4: Issues in Obesity

During my independent reading, I found lots of facts about how truly epidemic our weight problem is in America. For example, in the United States alone, it is estimated that there are about 93 million obese people. Each of those people cost $1,244 more to treat in 2002 than healthy people. The cost for obesity in America in 2000 is estimated to be a whopping $117 billion dollars. And that's just the start!(facts found on obesityaction.org)
This, plus many other facts, shows how big of a problem this really is, and how much we need to fix it. Even with the help of weight loss programs and ads on the TV, our obesity rate is still increasing. In my opinion, our government should look at the body mass index of each citizen annually and determine whether of not the amount of time they spend watching TV should be regulated. This would help those husky people stop loafing around and watching TV, and encourage them to get active.I know this idea sounds a bit crazy, but if you look at the facts and realize how big of a hole we're in, I think that you'd come to agree with me. Clearly, our country has a huge problem on our hands that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
