After hearing Michael Vartuli's speech on Global Warming, I feel that we need to be doing far more for our environment and its preservation. This issue is far more atrocious than I had ever imagined, and is only getting worse and worse each day. The facts are just astonishing! For example, I had no idea that the average American creates 4.7 pounds of waste each day, and that only 25 percent of plastic water bottles are recycled. America needs to be doing much more to help the environment, such as large-scale cleanup plans and carpooling.
Not only is it bad for the environment, global warming is very costly. Gas prices are rising constantly here in the US, taking a toll on each citizen's wallet. If we could carpool, however, this money could be saved and used somewhere more important. Also, it takes a lot of taxpayer money to pay for environmental cleanups and trash cleanups, which could be more effectively used somewhere else. We wouldn't even have to clean up this mess if we hadn't littered in the first place!
Truly, Americans need to stop being so selfish and should start caring for the world around them. Not only would these efforts help the environment, but they would also be advantageously cost effective.Even just a little bit of recycling or carpooling each day could help make a huge difference!

PLN #5: Issues on Obesity Continued
After further research, I still agree that our obesity problem is a growing epidemic that needs help. However, instead of regulating the amount of TV that these people get, I now think that our government should require and provide diet and exercise plans for obese citizens based on their Body Mass Index (BMI).
Forcing these people to not watch TV isn't enough to solve this problem. Not only do they need to stop getting fatter, they also need to reverse their problem with a better diet and good, fat-burning exercise. Most of these people eat such unhealthy foods because they are too poor to afford natural and organic foods. For example, at king soopers, a head of lettuce costs $1.50 while a 5-pack of Ramen Noodles costs only $1.00. Unfortunately, the food industry makes it more logical and affordable to buy unhealthy foods. But if our government can give these people healthier foods, they won't be eating so many fats and sugars and can take in healthier forms of energy. Also, they should be given opportunities to exercise. This is one of the best ways to burn fat and feel more energized throughout the day. Not only will they be losing fat, which will help them with their mobility, but exercise has been proven to help prevent other problems such as arthritis and even depression.
Clearly, our government should help these people out by giving them healthier foods and exercise. This would tremendously help our obesity problems.

PLN #4: Issues in Obesity
During my independent reading, I found lots of facts about how truly epidemic our weight problem is in America. For example, in the United States alone, it is estimated that there are about 93 million obese people. Each of those people cost $1,244 more to treat in 2002 than healthy people. The cost for obesity in America in 2000 is estimated to be a whopping $117 billion dollars. And that's just the start!(facts found on obesityaction.org)
This, plus many other facts, shows how big of a problem this really is, and how much we need to fix it. Even with the help of weight loss programs and ads on the TV, our obesity rate is still increasing. In my opinion, our government should look at the body mass index of each citizen annually and determine whether of not the amount of time they spend watching TV should be regulated. This would help those husky people stop loafing around and watching TV, and encourage them to get active.I know this idea sounds a bit crazy, but if you look at the facts and realize how big of a hole we're in, I think that you'd come to agree with me. Clearly, our country has a huge problem on our hands that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
